REQUEST: Improvements on Node System Usability and Documentation

Aximmetry nodes system are awesome, but the connection lines and organization are so overwhelming.

REQUEST: Improvements on Node System Usability and Documentation

Looking at this and try to understand what's happening, try to fix something or add a new feature it's just a pain.
I would like to request some attention to make this system more readable adding tools to organize and visualize better. Like:

  • Straight Connection Lines: An option to toggle between curved and straight lines for cleaner visuals.
  • Reroute Points: Adding "dots" along connection lines (like Unreal’s reroute nodes) to bend paths and reduce clutter.
  • Comment Backdrops: Group nodes into labeled sections with colored backgrounds for better organization.

[Example from Unreal/plugins that illustrate these ideas!]

Additionally, many nodes lack clear explanations. While some names are intuitive, others leave me guessing—this might mean I’m missing out on better solutions for my projects. Could we get brief tooltips or a documentation panel (similar to Unreal’s) that explains what each node does?

Hi,

With most updates, we try to incorporate existing and new functionalities into new linked compounds within the camera compound, making the systems more compartmentalized. This reduces the number of visible modules and connections within each compound. You can find more information on linked compounds here: https://aximmetry.com/learn/virtual-production-workflow/scripting-in-aximmetry/flow-editor/compound/

Also, be aware that the mixed camera compound is highly complex because it combines two camera compounds (virtual and tracked). It might be more beneficial to start by editing either a tracked or a virtual camera compound first.

Regarding Reroute Points, this feature was recently requested here: https://my.aximmetry.com/post/4537-request---reroute-modules-the-end-of-the
I have added your Straight Connection Lines request to our internal suggestion list and grouped it with the Reroute Points request.

For Comment Backdrops, you can use notes, this feature of the notes was added recently. You can learn more about it here: https://aximmetry.com/learn/virtual-production-workflow/starting-with-aximmetry/aximmetry-composer/notes/#modules-within-notes

Concerning the lack of explanations, some modules do have descriptions visible when you turn on the Info panel:
https://aximmetry.com/learn/virtual-production-workflow/starting-with-aximmetry/aximmetry-composer/notes/?draft=1#info-panel-1
However, we recognize this needs improvement and we plan to add descriptions for more modules in the future.

Warmest regards,

Hi,
Thanks for the detailed update! Glad to hear the reroute and straight-line suggestions are on the radar—really looking forward to those.
I’ll check out the new notes system! Hadn’t spotted it before, so thanks for pointing that out.
Agreed the info panel helps for some modules, but as you mentioned, expanding it (especially for library compounds) would be a game-changer. Many of those still feel like mystery boxes.

Other suggestions: - “Hide Input” Option: Like Nuke’s system, where connections only show when a node is selected. Could declutter busy graphs!

 - Alignment Shortcuts: E.g., Unreal’s Shift+A/W/S/D for quick alignment. Small tweak, big time-saver!

A quick question, there's any plan for a plugin system in Aximmetry? I think could be very beneficial as the community develop tools that can help others. Like the straight connection lines suggestion isn't a native solution in unreal, but a plugin developed by someone else. So this could complement native features and speed up workflows.

Hi,

Instead of using "Hide Input," you could use Transmit modules. You can learn more about them here: https://aximmetry.com/learn/virtual-production-workflow/scripting-in-aximmetry/flow-editor/pin/#transmit-modules
Note that while hiding things can declutter, it can also severely mislead people. That is one reason why Transmit modules are barely used in the camera compounds.

We have added Alignment Shortcuts to our request list.
Note that Aximmetry does not have an underlying grid behind the modules like Unreal. Instead, you can snap modules to each other using the Shift key: https://aximmetry.com/learn/virtual-production-workflow/scripting-in-aximmetry/flow-editor/flow-editor/#snapping

Aximmetry currently does not offer an editor plugin system like Unreal's Editor scripts or access to its source code like Unreal does. As far as I know, there are no plans to introduce such features in the near future. However, there is some limited capability to add plugins to certain Aximmetry features. You can get an idea of what features can have plugins or customization by checking out the folders inside the '2025.1.0_Broadcast_DE'\resources\plugin folder.

Warmest regards,
