Billboards in Aximmetry DE 2024.3.0 (Non-Beta) do not handle "walls/objects" between them correctly

 

Hello.

I am having an issue with having multiple billboards in view of the camera in Aximmetry DE 2024.3.0 .

If you zoom past the billboard in the foreground, the billboards in the background will comply with objects/walls between the correctly.   Otherwise, NONE of the billboards will comply with walls/objects correctly.  This is with "Allow Virtuals" ON or OFF. 

Please provide the settings to stop this behavior.  This did not happen with any previous version of Aximmetry.

Hi,

To make objects appear in front of the billboard, you need to enable the Render CustomDepth Pass for each object:

This was not required in previous versions. However, it is now necessary due to the updated handling method for billboards.

Thank you for the response and the link to the documentation.   I was wondering if this change was caused by changes from Unreal Engine from version 5.3 to 5.4 or if Aximmetry decided to make changes to the Billboard system to improve quality?

@Eifert: This important change should be highlighted much more clearly in both the release notes and the documentation page. I expect you will get a lot of support questions regarding this in the coming weeks.

I want to echo what TwentyStudios said.   This unexpected change in how billboards are handled has forced me to rollback to the previous version of Aximmetry DE.  I have over 60 sets that all contain many objects between the camera and the billboards and objects between multiple billboards.   This change has the potential to cause one of the highest workload experiences in any Aximmetry DE upgrade in the past and delay being able to upgrade to the current version anytime soon without knowing why and what the benefits are for having to deal with this change in how billboards are implemented in the latest version.
