SOLVED: Record to same computer with 2024.X.X ?

I hope this doesn't sound like too dumb a question, but how can I record directly to a file on the same computer running the latest version of Axy 2024.1.0 ?

I found a couple of older tutorials/posts describing how to output video on the same machine using the Record_3-Audio.xcomp or the Video Recorder, but with the latest version (2024.1.0) these are asking for a valid output index (monitors don't count). If I only have monitors set up as output devices, the record nodes/comps refuse to record so, how can I record to a file?

Apologies if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find anything with a search in the forums.

SOLUTION FOUND: So it turns out that you must have at least 1 video input mapped in the device mapper even if you are not using it. In the case of my test laptop, I simply mapped the built-in camera to device #1. The message log kept faking me out by telling me that I didn't have a valid output device at Index #2, so I was looking in the wrong place. It should be added to the documentation and/or setup videos that at least one input device must be mapped to enable output recording.

Hi,

This happened because you turned on the Record Video Out:
SOLVED: Record to same computer with 2024.X.X ?

  • When Record Video Out is turned on, it will record the index on the Video Outputs window:

You can specify which index to record with the Video Out Index:

  • When Record Video Out is turned off, it will always record the video connected to its Out input pin:

Warmest regards,

Ah, Ok. I see. I didn't realize the Record Video Out button was linked to the Video Out Index field. I just assumed that Record Video Out was like a master switch for recording video of any kind since the node is named Record_3-Audio.

If, as a new user, I may be so brazen as to offer a UI tweak: Perhaps the Video Out Index field should be renamed Record Video Index where anything other than 0 will record from the set index, but if the field is set to 0, it performs the same function as the Record Video Out switch turned off. This would both eliminate confusion about the functionality of the Record Video Out button as well as help simplify the GUI.

At any rate, thanks again for the clarification! :) This is amazing software!
