Beta 2023.3 blocking NDI webcam?

Hi there.

During testing we found that 2023.3 seems to deliberately black NDI Webcam (from the NDI tools suite).
While the audio input still ahows the NDI Webcam Audio inputs:

No webcam input is listed in Video In:

This is also true when we start Axy with the /dshowlegacy option.

Has this been blocked deliberately, or is it a bug?

Cheers & all the best.

Eric.

Hi Eric,

Yes, it is deliberate. We do not want the user to accidentally select a DirectShow input while the same source can also be directly accessed via its dedicated API. The former has a couple of drawbacks that can affect the quality of the production negatively, and we want to avoid that. (The same goes for the SDI inputs, which usually also appear as DirectShow sources in Windows, therefore we filter these out as well.)

The appearance of NDI as audio source is not deliberate, it simply escaped our attention. Thank you for drawing our attention to it!

Hi Axy.

Hmmm... understood.
Unfortunately some parts of our pipeline rely on NDI Webcam.
(The reasons are manifold and don't need to be discussed here....)

So before switching to 2023.3.x we have to re-design those parts of our pipeline.
To be honest, this is slightly annoying, but I do understand why you guys blocked this.

Cheers & all the best.

Just to rub it in one more time....

We're using e.g. NDI HX Capture on an iPad to transmit the screen content of the iPad to Axy.
We're also playing short videos on the iPad, transmitting them in the same way.
In older versions of Axy there was no Audio in the NDI Video input, so we used an Audio Input in Axy to get the Audio from NDI Webcam input (which in turn received the iPad signal)
Now there *is* an audio signal in Axys Video Input, but the audio is absolutely horrible and stuttering. Just not useable.
Since NDI Webcam has been blocked for various (most likely monetary) reasons,
we now have to completely rethink and redesign that part of our pipeline, most likely hosting the videos somewhere else.
Thanks for not that much in this case :-/

Eric.
