Excuse me, how does the freed protocol control the zoom in and out of the virtual camera?

Well, your best bet is to follow the instructions provided here:
https://aximmetry.com/learn/tutorials/for-studio-operators/camera-calibrator/
Make sure to have the calibration pattern printed on some sturdy surface (we used 6mm DiBond, which is tough as hell... :-)).
But foamboard should do fine as well.
The Calibrator pretty much talks you through the different steps. (Nice work, Axy!)
Hi.
The zoom values should be embedded in the FreeD stream from your camera just like any other parameter (Pan/Tilt/....) and recognized by Axy.
You will have to calibrate your PTZ Camera though, so that Axy properly 'learns' the lens characteristics.
Cheers.
Eric.
